Android USA

By Bene Rullan

Android n.
An automaton that is created from biological materials and resembles a human. Also called humanoid.

Watch n.
A small timepiece worn typically on a strap on one’s wrist.

When we hear the word ‘android’ we think of something futuristic that at the same time possesses human resemblance, humanoids possibly equipped with the latest artificial intelligence. But what if it’s applied to wristwatches, what images will it conjure then? Will these watches be fitting for an android to wear? Will they be designed in a way that automatons will appreciate? Or are they watch designs only an automaton can dream up, if they ever dream. And how will they look like?

In the world of horology (the study of watches), classics rule: a certain air of distinction or status is put forward or portrayed. Breaking forth from that box is a gravitational pull that is hard to break free from. The watch industry is centuries deep in the making. Its highs and lows have forged it with learned resilience that helped it survived from a period where challenges almost destroyed the watch industry, whether from outside influence or from within.

Android USA is a watch company that is forward-looking yet never forgetting its past, its humble beginnings. The designs that it brings out have a pallet of colors that rivals a tropical underwater scene – from the deepest hues of velvety blues and purples, to the brightest of oranges and yellows, and then to the reds that evoke fire. How does one who uses nature’s colors incorporate them in a very “android” design?

Wing Liang, the sole designer of Android Watches, has been doing this for 20 years designing in a manner that makes people notice. Even I who is not (yet) an avid watch collector, or someone who is in need of a watch, suddenly finds himself wearing one that is not a typically designed watch. Wing’s creations are industrial, futuristic, sleek. They allow you to imagine a place where technology, androids, and humans co-exist, a sci-fi scene so clear that it somehow allows you to be like Jules Verne; a world where one’s imagination rules.

“When I design a watch I am inspired by everything around me, from a sci-fi movie to music, from a car to a toaster”.

Android USA’s collections really show the company vision in every watch it brings out. The Virtuoso Collection is a set that shows respect for the past but forges ahead to the future. It has design cues that reminds you of the steam engines of the past and yet materials used are so forward thinking that it would seem to almost clash but Wing beautifully intertwines time and a piece you can admire.

There is the Hercules series that uses ceramic as a case and bracelet material then hints of stainless steel components to complete the designer’s vision. Then we have the Divemaster series that has a case design that is unique but functional for its purpose and somehow reminds me of an underwater vessel’s entry hatch or porthole with a thick glass. One particular model that shows Androids USA’s signature style is the Aquajet LE T100 automatic, clad in solid stainless steel, from bezel, case, to bracelet. It is a very substantial watch that is not shy in letting you feel its weight. Added to the dial is the strong glow of its tritium tubes – you’ll have no problem telling time in dim or even pitch black environments.

The materials chosen to build the watch are of no afterthought, they have been planned out from the very beginning. When Wing takes notice of something, it gives him inspiration to design which elicits praise from the watch community. One example is a marine exhibit that Wing attended. Upon seeing these deep sea creatures strutting their own bioluminescence, a spark came on in this designer’s mind (which was, after all, supposed to be relaxing and enjoying the exhibit). The Bioluminescence watch is the result of this encounter. Hopefully it will become a series in the future as the reception for this watch was overwhelmingly well-received. The utilization of the superluminova material, a staple in the watch industry specially used in divers’ watches is basically for functional purposes, a glow in the dark material to help tell time in low light conditions. But where color is involved one has to ask – why not use it as a design element? This is where Wing’s creativity comes in, a watch that changes personality, its look when nighttime comes.

“building into the future while respecting the past”

Android USA’s creations pull the past in and melds it beautifully into the future, with its futuristic design that both automatons and humans alike will want to wear. Android is a watch company that is ready for the 21st century, a company that is not afraid to explore the idea that inspiration can come from a living creature or from cold inanimate objects. To combine it with such intent and purpose adds to the appeal of Wing Liang, and watch collectors can’t have enough of his creations. For a collector, one watch is not enough. After all, watches do the same thing – tell time. What makes it desirable is that Android watches are avant garde sculptures that puts into perspective past milestones in innovation, art, and technology that propel us into the future. Android watches indeed are a very description of what an android means: very futuristic in design execution yet wrapping so naturally on your human wrist. It exudes a certain attitude that innovation is alive and well in each of us. The watch reminds us not only of time itself but also prods us to appreciate the craftsmanship and spirit of invention and imagination we all have within.

“The most difficult task is to create a simplistic design that differs from other brands, I believe that less can be more”. – Wing Liang, Android-USA

Congratulations to the one and only Master Wing Liang. I am happy to call him my friend. He is not only a Master at his art of watch making, but a good person. His company has the best Customer Service. I have never experienced such personal, professional CS in my life. I have only been an android collector for less than a year but already own 20 which include the Hercules Flying Tourbillon, Bioluminescencen Aquajet T100, Enterprise, and DM T100. I am waiting on the 25th to purchase the T100 Valjoux 7750 Vertuoso. Thank you Master Wing.
